"Number one is just to gain a passion for running. To love the morning, to love the trail, to love the pace on the track. And if some kid gets really good at it, that’s cool too.”

A. We practice on Monday, Tuesday, Thursday and Fridays at 4:30pm to 6pm. We meet at our home course: The upper field next to the Monterey Bay Charter School. On Fridays we meet at George Washington Park (by the baseball field)
A. We typically focus on building an aerobic engine (aka getting used to running farther easier) 2 days a week. Based on ability, this could be anywhere from a 1 mile to 5 mile run. The other days we focus on running form, core strength, and speed work. One practice per week is a fun run (this is when the magic happens).
A. Absolutely! Our goal is to create a love of running, not make running a punishment. If your runner wants to run or learn how to run that is awesome. But, we are not here to make athletes run if they don't want to. So make sure it is your athletes choice to join, not yours.
A. Yes, please. We are always looking for parent volunteers to help with our squad. We need help on our long run days. This consists of running 20 mins out and the turning around and running 20 mins back. We need runners of all abilities. Our run groups range from 12 mins per mile down to 5 mins per mile.
A. Coach Tracy would answer that with "a sparkling attitude". Some other great things would be hydration of some sort. Water is best, but some sort of electrolyte drink is okay. But not everyday. Running attire is required as well. Please makes sure runners aren't showing up in jeans. Lastly, and maybe the most obvious and most forgotten...Running shoes.
A. With XC, shoes are the only equipment needed. They can be expensive, and hard to find (for smaller sizes). We recommend trail running shoes that have a larger lug pattern than your typical road shoe. There is no one brand that is best; it is important to have your runner try the shoe and make sure it fits their foot. Local shoe stores, Fleetfeet or the Treadmill, are the best resource. We also have a discount code U42N5BPF for www.runningwarehouse.com. Remember just because it has a swoosh on it, doesn't make it a running shoe. We would never want shoes to be a deterrent from joining the team. We maintain a small library of shoes that can be checked out for a season. Just reach out to Coach Ryan if you have any questions on shoes or our library.
